Andy Mineo had plenty to be happy about last year. The success of the song “You Can’t Stop Me” alone would be enough for any young rapper to be pleased with. But, like many in the rap game today, Mineo lives up to that track in that he doesn’t seem to stop, ever. Last week he dropped a new album, II: The Sword and it’s pretty fantastic.
Mineo has the ability to actually belt out some R&B magic alongside rapping, and he does so all over this release with ease. While the record splits the track into two songs, “Almost There” offers up Mineo doing his thing like no one else and it works. On “Friends” Mineo sticks to his hip hop roots and the familiar sound is just as welcomed as the different touches he places elsewhere. You could say the same about the nutty beat on “Crazy” where Mineo drops science on the mic, occasionally offering up more verse than rhymes. Though the closer “Shame” featuring Josh Garrels shows how far ahead of the curve Mineo really is. The gospel tuned track sticks in your head while Mineo gives a narrative that feels deeply personal and deep.
II: The Sword is available to stream on all streaming sites, or can be purchased on all digital store fronts. Andy Mineo will be on the Better Late Than Never tour with Lecrae from September 27 at Knitting Factory in Spokane through November 11 at Intersection in Grand Rapids.
