We’re Getting Excited For New Molly Burch

Molly Burch seems to know what she wants out of her career. A little over a year since her last full length release Please Be Mine, the Austin transplanted Los Angeles native is back with First Flower, and we can’t wait to hear it. With three singles – first “Wild,” a beautifully crafted swoon song, and – then “To the Boys,” a plucky pop track, and now “Candy,” Burch has signaled that she’s ready to keep our ears happy, and we’re itching for that moment to come.

With “Wild,” Burch has no issues adding these jazzy hooks and a narrative that’s only brought to life by her intriguing vocals. Almost like a new world pop star, the song is catchy but also doesn’t fall into the world of acts like Taylor Swift nor does it fall around the world of artists like Cat Power or Angel Olsen. It’s different yet engaging, lush but not overdone, and well crafted but not over your head.

With “To the Boys,” Burch is hitting all of the notes you want to hear, and not giving you any you can’t handle. The track is smooth as silk, her vocals droop over the top, and the songwriting is the best we’ve heard from her. The soft backing vocals make for a nice touch, as Burch shows that she can tackle new styles like second nature.

With “Candy,” Burch keeps things light and snappy, though her vocals drip all over the track from beginning to end. The opening guitar tone falls in line with her sound, though it feels closer to a step in a new direction, and in many ways its reminiscent of the kind of guitar sounds employed by Johnny Marr in The Smiths. It’s a song that makes us even more ecstatic for the new album.

First Flower will be released on October 5, and is available for preorder through Captured Tracks and Bandcamp on various formats. Molly Burch is on tour throughout the year starting at ACL Festival in Austin on October 6 and running until December 7 at Night & Day Cafe in Manchester. A complete list of her tour dates can be found here.
