The boygenius E.P. is Everything You’d Hoped and More

Super groups sound so passe when you see the phrase or when you even type the words. Typically, it’s artists performing together who wouldn’t normally. For boygenius, it’s three friends who’ve all performed together over the years. Mixing the strengths of all three artists, Lucy Dacus, Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers, their new E.P. is all you’d hope from the three and so much more.

Opening with the Dacus lead sounds of “Bite The Hand,” it’s obvious that this is what you were waiting for. The backing vocals on the track make it a full effort, and not just a song by Dacus. There’s a melody that’s as soft as what we’ve come to expect of Dacus’ work, though once the chorus hits, there’s a heft that works so well, you should have it in your head for days. This gets followed by the catchy track featuring Bridgers, “Me & My Dog.” Bridgers’ soft whisper adds so much to any song, but here with the doubled guitar effect leaves an impression, and makes for the most endearing of sounds. The backing vocals again here mix with Bridgers to craft a sound that’s so wonderfully strong, that it’s hard to forget. “Souvenir” from Baker has the same effect, it’s as if these three knew they could make such songs, and that’s what you’re getting. It’s the best points of each, put together to create something worthy of your time.

The slower opening of “Stay Down” has an almost ballad approach and it’s lovely in its stride. The gnarled guitar notes of “Salt In The Wound” elevates Dacus’ vocals to a new space, showcasing how soft they are while the distorted strums add weight. The closer, “Ketchum, ID” even feels like the perfect closer, almost like Bridgers is alone in your home singing to you from the bottom of her heart before Baker and Dacus show up to sing backing vocals, and then add their own parts. It all works, as it should, and leaves any listener more than satisfied with the results.

You can stream the boygenius E.P. on all streaming platforms and you can preorder the vinyl from Matador Records before it drops on November 9. You can see them together tonight on Late Night with Seth Myers. You can also purchase a limited edition vinyl from them at their tour starting tomorrow night at Brooklyn Steel and ending November 30 at The Wiltern in Los Angeles. A complete list of their tour dates can be found here.
