Punk music is definitely in need of new voices to keep the genre going. With so many bands recently cleaning up their sound in hopes of playing larger venues and getting their shirts sold at Hot Topic, it’s nice to see a band that still embodies the “middle finger” to the industry ideals in how their music is presented. New York’s Drug Church aren’t the kind of band that sits still for long, and on their new album Cheer out today, they keep things engaging without selling out in the process.
The album’s opener “Grubby” comes on in a searing fashion, echoing the melodic notes that many new punk bands are going for. However, in the hands of these guys, those notes get met with sheer force and speedy power to create a harsher and more driving sound. This continues on the following tracks “Strong References” and “Avoidarama,” where the band is happy to give you some catchy tunes while staying hard at the same time.
There’s a power to the songs that can’t be denied as they clock towards the end of each song with a harsh intensity like many bands today seem to miss. The power of “Dollar Story,” the murky fuzz of “Unlicensed Guidance Counselor,” and the speedy darkness of “Unlicensed Hall Monitor,” all tick upwards in terms of sheer raw potency and melodic underpinned strengths.
That’s not to say that it’s all heavy handed punk here as tracks like “Weed Pin,” “Foam Pit,” and “Tillary” all offer up melodies that go on for days while not steering too deep into the darkness. But the intense punk notations with energetic force is where the magic behind this album lies, and places Drug Church further ahead of many in their genre, as well as the bands en route to moving units over energizing a crowd of sweaty teens.
