Yeah Yeah Yeahs front woman Karen O and producer Danger Mouse have revealed the first single, “Lux Prima,” off their forthcoming collaborative album. The song is a nine minute epic, seamlessly transitioning between juxtaposing sounds that are ambient and electronic, soulful and vibrant.
Danger Mouse elaborated on that transformation in a statement saying, “With ‘Lux Prima,’ we were really looking for a place rather than a sound. It was our first shared destination so we thought we’d take our time getting there. The song itself is a bit of a journey, but all the parts felt like they needed each other.”
Following an atmospheric three minute intro, the middle part of the track featuring Karen O’s vocals has a cinematic quality to it, with a gorgeous orchestral arrangement behind a tight rhythmic beat. Karen O’s voice is perfectly layered in with the composition, almost taking on a different form alongside the dynamic instrumental. The final three minute outro combines all the prior elements in a way that does feel necessary and complete. The song could have ended sooner, but you wouldn’t understand the final destination without making the trek.
You can stream “Lux Prima” on all platforms. The single will be released on 12” white vinyl with an etched B-side exclusively at independent record stores on December 14. Album details are forthcoming, with an anticipated drop in 2019.
