Texas troubadour Charley Crockett has long been blazing his own trail with his unique combination of country, blues, and Cajun soul. Crockett dropped a stellar new studio album, Lonesome As A Shadow, earlier this year that is already showing up on best of 2018 lists. Now Crockett is back with a surprise second release of 2018 – Charley Crockett presents Lil G.L.’s Blue Bonanza – out December 7 via Thirty Tigers.
The release is Crockett’s second in an ongoing series titled after his nickname, “Lil G.L.,” which sees him put his own spin on traditional country and blues gems. While Crockett interpreted classic country tunes on his first Lil G.L. release, he focuses on both country and blues on Lil G.L.’s Blue Bonanza. The record features covers of 15 staples originally performed by Ray Charles, T-Bone Walker, Ernest Tubb, and Jimmy Reed among others, cut live to tape with Crockett’s touring band, The Blue Drifters.
The first preview of Lil G.L.’s Blue Bonanza comes with the track “Good Time Charley’s Got The Blues,” a country standard written by Danny O’Keefe in 1967 and recorded by the likes of Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, and Leon Russell. Crockett’s version has a more modern feel, with electric guitar and Rhodes piano supporting his aching vocal. Given Crockett’s excellent influences and distinct style, the rest of the album is sure to be a treat.
You can stream “Good Time Charley’s Got The Blues” on all streaming platforms. You can pre-order Lil G.L.’s Blue Bonanza digitally on all platforms, or on CD/LP from Charley Crockett’s webstore. You can catch Charley Crockett on tour throughout Texas and Oklahoma at the end of December, and at Stagecoach Festival in April. A full list of tour dates can be found here.
