The music industry has it instilled in our heads that in order to remain relevant, artists need to churn out work at a rapid pace before stagnation kills their career. New York duo Buke & Gase have succeeded in crafting a meticulous and intentional collection of songs in light of their upcoming album Scholars over a hushed period of five years, gravitating towards an evolutionary sound mixed with originally crafted musical devices and stepping away from the instrumentation that once defined them. Arone Dyer and Aron Sanchez’s project reinvents their vision in a manner that most musicians stray away from, in that they’re not afraid to take chances and hone in on an album where every minute counts.
Previously sharing three singles from their anticipated upcoming album, due out January 18th via Brassland, Buke & Gase’s latest for their self-titled “Scholars” initiates with a pulsating beat underneath Dyer’s lyrics and live footage feeding across the screen. While live clips render themselves overplayed, the pacing of the video’s delivery take on a strobe-light effect and cascading with such rapidity at times that its propulsion takes on a life of its own, at the very least compelling you to eagerly await what’s next. Says vocalist Dyer about their single, “[w]hen I sing this, my chest billows with a desire to believe that I will overcome my faults, even though the subtle judgment that I won’t by those I love compresses my spine, keeping me Earthbound. I extend this empathy to those whose truths aren’t yet recognized by contradictive social expectations.”
