Twenty years ago, if not further back, the field of noise rock bands was a pretty hefty one. Bands like Nation of Ulysses and Jesus Lizard never really fit into the molds of a specific genre, which may be why they were such standouts at the time. A little later, Houston had bands like Bring Back The Guns and Fatal Flying Guilloteens, both bands who took noise to a whole new space, mixing in elements of math heavy emo and punk with ease. However, not until Houston’s Le Chien Freud started coming around, had we heard that sound with such intensity and veracity. On their new album Le Chein Frued, they get heavier and darker while keeping the energy levels high and they do so in a short time frame.
For starters, this album is mixed loud, which is a good thing. The fierce intensity behind how the guitars are structured on “Carey Mulligan Dunking on Everyone for an Hour” offers plenty of depth-especially for a song that goes hard, slows down and returns to an intense pacing. The vocals sound like demands more than most music today, and it works well with how the band plays. They definitely get a lot in for songs that rarely-just once, go over two and a half minutes in length. The dual vocals on the math heavy sounds of “Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires and the Way You Feel,” work better than you’d think. Le Chien Freud are just burning down the building here and they’re not worried about who gets out alive either.
They keep the intensity going throughout the release. “Failed Attempts at Self Decapitating Humor” has a melody that you wouldn’t think to hear, “It’s an Honor Just to Be Nominated” brings plenty of emo core feels in its simplicity and dark undertones, and “We’ve Taken This Song Seriously So That You Don’t Have To” contains some of the more intricate parts of the album without getting too heady in the process. If more bands making noise rock were as fluid as Le Chien Freud, maybe we’d get to hear more of it on a regular basis.
You can stream the album on all streaming sites, you can purchase it digitally in all digital shops, including from Bandcamp. At this time, Le Chien Freud doesn’t have any tour dates listed, though that should change soon.
