For a while now, the elctro-pop world has known the reworked eighties and nineties pop of West London’s Shura. In 2016 she dropped the album Nothing’s Real and took lots of acclaim and praise with her. Now, in the midst of working on her upcoming album for Secretly Canadian, she’s dropped her first single for the label and it’s a trip. With “BKLYNDN” Shura proves that she’s ahead of the curve.
The song is laid out with a heft that you don’t hear much in electro-pop. The stop and start of the opening before her vocals come in have more of an R&B feel than the typical dance pop fare. Shura is treading new waters here while giving your ears a chill jam to play in the rain or on a lightning filled evening. It all works, including the seemingly random sounds mixed with chill wave synths that dance all over the relaxed track.
You can stream the song on all streaming sites, you can watch the video above or on YouTube or you can purchase the track in all digital retailers. The second album from Shura is currently in the works. You can catch Shura in person on October 23 at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, NY or at Roundhouse in London, U.K. on November 14.
