It’s been a while since we heard from Holly Herndon, and with her that just means she’s cooking up something epic. Her last album Platform was four years ago, and it blew us away with its narrative and complex structuring. On her new single “Eternal,” Herndon adds a new narrative of standing in contrast to the idea of technology being dehumanizing. With a new album PROTO coming in May, the song is a small glimpse of what’s to come from the Avant Garde and electronic music pioneer.
The song and the video are refreshing, offering up a whole new sound from Herndon. With sonic arrays of sounds coming from multiple vocal tracks and reincorporated synths and beats, Herndon isn’t flexing but she’s definitely treading into new territory. The sound is so forward and so future that the catchy nature of the track may cause you to forget that so much here is ahead of so many, while Herndon takes us into the new world she’s created.
You can stream “Eternal” on all streaming sites or purchase it in all digital music shops, or you can watch the video above or on YouTube. PROTO will be made available to the public on May 10 and you can pre-order it directly from 4AD Records. Holly Herndon will be on tour beginning April 26 at Donaufestival in Krems, Austria until July 20 at Manchester International Festival in Manchester, U.K. A complete listing of her upcoming appearances can be accessed here.
