On LP 3, American Football Expands Their Sound For the Better

When nineties emo core happened, it happened pretty quickly and was over almost as soon as it began. Over the years, we’ve been lucky to see many of the bands that made up the genre return to releasing new music and touring regularly. The smarter ones realized that they could grow and expand their sounds beyond the confines of the emo genre, and American Football is in that place now all over their latest release American Football, or LP 3. On it, the four piece expands on the more melodic sides of what they’ve written in the past and grows it with more lush instrumentation and featured vocals that shimmer and pop like a shiny new toy.

The bells that open the album signal change with “Silhouettes,” the way “Every Wave to Ever Rise (feat. Elizabeth Powell)” begins like a song off of the original album without sounding dated and the slower and more melodic touches of “Uncomfortably Numb (feat. Haley Williams)” come on, all showcase how deep and excitingly different the album is.

But aside from the singles, the album is rife with change and growth. “Heir Apparent” opens like it’s made by a completely different band, while it still holds your attention with a completely new structuring for the band. There’s a lot here, all of it works, but in so many ways it features a band in the middle of a rebirth where they are extending their sound to a higher plain. The biggest standout of the album is probably on “Life Support,” the album’s closer. Coming in at under six minutes, it has that slow and noodled opening that you love from the band’s earlier albums while doing so in a fresh new way. In so many manners, this is American Football, but like the rest of the album, it’s them doing things in an uncomfortable fashion where they find the beauty and the balance somewhere in the middle.

You can stream LP 3 on all streaming sites, you can pick it up digitally from all online music stores, you can purchase it in various formats and packages from your local record shop or from Polyvinyl Records. American Football is on tour beginning tomorrow at Treefort Music Festival in Boise, ID until July 27 at Fuji Rock Festival in Yuzawa, Niigata Prefecture, Japan.
