You might not know the music of New York’s Ariana and the Rose, but that should end today. With a host of releases that go back for a good while, the pop music they create makes what we know as typical pop music sound stale. With her new single “You Were Never My Boyfriend” from her upcoming part one of her two part Constellations E.P., it’s obvious real fast that there’s something magical about the structure of this brand of pop.
With just vocals and snaps, the simplistic approach gets pierced with periodic synths, creating a build that forces you to focus on the lyrics. With a breathy voice and an electro-pop beat, the song feels future without getting too far off track. It’s catchy, it has elements of painful dissonance and yet it sticks with you after you hear it just once.
You can stream the single on all streaming sites ahead of the Constellations Phase One release on July 26. Ariana and the Rose will be appearing July 20 and 21 at the 25th Anniversary for the Vans Warped Tour in Mountain View, CA.
