With Cuz I Love You, Lizzo Has No Problem Taking Center Stage

We’ve been lucky enough to watch Lizzo grow as an artist and a performer over the years. It’s always felt like she was just getting better and better with each release since we caught her at a small festival in the South. Playing by her own rules, making the moves that she sees fit have definitely paid off for her. With her new album Cuz I Love You, she not only grows as an artist but she steps things up across the board leaving us with an album we just want to play at full volume again and again.

The best way to describe this album is to say that it’s a party where Lizzo is the best host ever. This album is 100% the Lizzo show, as it should be. While yes, there are guest spots from Missy Elliott and Gucci Mane respectively-the shining moments come from Lizzo herself. The way her voice opens the album with the grandiose notes of “Cuz I Love You” before she comes in with emotional heft is so masterful. The song feels like the beginning to a stellar night where Lizzo drops well placed rhymes with ease. The slow bump of “Like A Girl” where Lizzo’s mic skills mix with these dual vocal stabs that add pop snap to the track opening it up like you’ve never heard from an MC before.

In fact, the tracks where it’s just Lizzo are enough you’d need. “Juice” has a disco pop shimmer with a real “ladies night” luster, “Crybaby” is a sultry number where you’re forced to notice the lyrics in the best way possible and “Better In Color” is a powerful banger that works in any season. Though, with the pop sheen that the record contains, the standout is probably “Jerome.” The song has the touches of a slow burner where Lizzo gives emotionally charged lyrics to the listener where you not only realize that she could make a whole soul album on her own, but that she’s real and without any fraudulence. It could be a gamble for most artists to place a soul inspired track amidst a sea of pop jams, but for Lizzo it feels perfect.

Cuz I Love You is ready to stream on all streaming sites, it can be purchased digitally in all online music retailers and can also be purchased in bundles from Atlantic Records. Lizzo is set to take the stage on tour at Coachella April 21 in Indio, CA until July 27 at Mo Pop Festival in Detroit, MI. A complete list of her upcoming appearances can be accessed here.
