Get To Know the Pop Sounds of Brooklyn’s Misty Mtn

Pretty much no matter what you do, you’re going to hear pop music whenever you’re out and about. Pop music in so many ways has become a part of our culture and way of life. However, most of what you hear is garbage, or at least it lacks the art side to the word artist. Nowadays many pop stars don’t write their own songs, they have a team of producers working on their tracks and many have backing vocal tracks for their “live” shows. With that said, it’s always nice to hear the side of pop that doesn’t have all of that baggage attached. Enter Brooklyn duo Misty Mtn. Though you may not be familiar with them, their new E.P. Missed Your Call steers away from the bubble gum side of pop and takes you away to a place full of high art and well crafted melodies.

While the assigned genre here is electro-pop, where Misty Mtn differs from the bulk of the genre is that there’s more depth and craft here. The density of the tracks doesn’t mean that they’re encumbered by the typical over production based pop you may be used to. The opener “Drive” for example, has plenty of moving parts but it still has enough snap to hold your attention. The easy going stride of the track helps move it along, though the essential pop nuances make it work on multiple levels. While “We’ll Call It Even” has dual vocals, they’re done in a way that’s not overbearing. The soft lead vocal adds a tender side to what these two can do together, though the dance pop undercurrent of synths and beats creates a sexy R&B vibe that feels fresh and original in how it’s displayed. The duo utilizes multiple methods and genres in their songs as well. The shoegazed opening of “Guess Who’s Back” adds a nice touch while the slow burn of “Goodnight” comes off as honest and personal while still keeping its toes in the pop world.

Missed You Call is available to stream on all streaming platforms, it can be purchased in all digital music retailers as well. Misty Mtn will perform at Kinfolk 94 in Brooklyn, NY on May 11.
