Last year we told you about producer and performer John Allen Stephens and his debut album Radioclub.lp made our year end best of list. Stephens is not only a producer on the latest album by The Suffers and engineer for the new album by Tee Vee, but a performer who has the ears and the chops to craft his own pop jams as well. On his new single “Addiction” out tomorrow, he takes all that he’s put into others’ work and gives you ear candy from beginning to end.
The track has an immediacy that you don’t seem to get in most modern pop. With backing vocals and plenty of uptempo pacing, the song hist on both the R&B and the pop spectrum. The backing instrumentation from trumpeter Adam DeWalt known for his work with Solange helps the song hit, as does the sax from Leo Rayon and the keys from Zeke Listenbee. But in the end, it’s the sensibilities of Stephens alongside top notch production that makes the track shimmer and stay with you after you hear it.
“Addiction” can be heard above, it can be pre-ordered from all digital music retailers and it will be available to stream on all platforms tomorrow when it gets released to the world. John Allen Stephens is set to perform in Houston at White Oak Music Hall on June 21.
