Last year we felt like Historian by Lucy Dacus was the best album of the year. It wasn’t a stretch, as its beautiful vignettes of tone and her vocals made us swoon at every note. Dacus has been dropping holiday themed singles this year, one for Valentine’s Day, one for Mother’s Day and now with “Forever Half Mast” ahead of Independence Day she proves that she can still give us plenty of wonderful music.
With a new E.P. due in the Fall, the song evokes much of the tender strokes of vocal prowess that Dacus holds and gives to listeners of her music. The track is immediate with Dacus’ vocals at the start and a pedal steel that glides on and off of the track while the drums snap and pop in the background. The song feels personal but also easy to relate to, and the chorus is about as catchy as anything she’s written to date. There’s plenty to adore here, from the acoustic strum to the sing song pacing of the track, it’s a winner from start to finish.
“Forever Half Mast” can be streamed on all streaming sites or purchased digitally from all digital music stores or from Matador Records. Lucy Dacus is on tour beginning June 28 at Friday Cheers at Brown’s Island in Richmond, VA until November 17 at Corona Capital Festival in Mexico City, MX A complete listing of her upcoming appearances can be accessed here.
