When we were first introduced to the music of UK group Modern Nature, we were essentially at a loss for words. With nuances leaning towards post-punk and traditional math rock, the indie group made their presence known with their lead single. Now with their debut album How To Live due in late August, their second single “Footsteps” and its accompanying video could take your breath away.
There’s a sorcery that bleeds the instrumentation together here. The way the guitar is playing between notes of synths and the drums offers a sound that’s upbeat yet also intimate and intricate. The way in which the horn comes in like an uninvited visitor who doesn’t proclaim too loudly is like no one else. There’s plenty of delicate notes and intricate structures here, yet none are treated as too precious. The video has a very cinematic approach, offering what happens to those who go day in and day out with the same routine. The differences between country and city are separated by footsteps, which shouldn’t be lost on anyone who views this.
The video can be viewed above or on YouTube, the single can be streamed on all platforms while How To Live can be pre-ordered on multiple formats directly from Bella Union ahead of its August 23 release. Modern Nature is on tour starting July 26 at Port Eliot Festival in St. Germans, Cornwall until September 21 at The Louisiana in Bristol, UK. The band’s complete tour schedule can be accessed here.
