When we first caught a sold out set from Cuco, we honestly had just heard his name about a week prior. The LA native has been popping off ever since he began dropping music, and his chilled out demeanor has struck a nerve with anyone who’s blazed alongside his music. On his new album Para Mi he strips away a lot of that chill tone and gets straight to the bangers. The album hits harder with more intensity and energy than we figured it would, and has made us bigger fans in the process.
While the “Intro (feat. Foos Gone Wild)” isn’t what makes the album different, the energy that flows on “Keeping Tabs (feat. SuscatO)” will. The song mixes Cuco’s relaxed vibes with a snappier pacing, creating a song that stays with you. In fact, the high energy occurs again and again, and the album doesn’t really slow down until “Ego Death in Thailand.” The album is produced on another level, showing that Cuco is ahead of many in his class of performers, while never really deterring from what he did before inking with a major label.
Where “Far Away From Home” feels like what you’d expect from him, songs like “Best Friend” and “Lovetripper” take his sound to higher places. Cuco isn’t really flexing here, the album just mixes chill vibes and high energy based hip hop chillwave like no one prior. Even the album’s closer “Do Better” has a very future sound where Cuco goes closer to his earlier works, yet still keeps enough pop sheen in the track to get it to stay with you well after you hear it. Para Mi is a lot, it’s ahead of the curve and shows there’s a reason every label scrambled to sign the young artist to a deal.
Para Mi is available to stream on all streaming sites, it can be purchased digitally in all online music retailers or physically from Interscope Records. Cuco is on tour starting August 01 in San Jose, CA at Plaza De Cesar Chavez until December 03 in Alton, TX at Pulga Los Portales. His complete tour schedule can be found here.
