Chicago’s Matt Muse comes from the same hip hop world as acts like Noname and Saba to name a few. The rapper has an ability to have rhymes flow like beautiful poetic verse, while still hitting hard on the mic. On his latest single “MYSELF [PHILAUTIA II] (feat. Joseph Chilliams & Mon’Aerie)” from his upcoming release Love & Nappyness, Muse makes it apparent that he’s definitely ready to turn hip hop on its ear with his future and forward approach to songwriting.
The song has enough verse in it that most artists would bombard the listener, yet Muse works well with such amounts of verbiage. The track is barely over the three minute mark yet his flow spits words that could fill the average five minute hip hop track. The song flows and has a light touch that feels like it hits harder than a song that contains tons of percussion. Muse is definitely doing his own thing here and it works on multiple levels.
The song can be streamed above or on SoundCloud, and it can be purchased wherever you download music. Love & Nappyness can be purchased or streamed when it releases to the world on August 09. Matt Muse will be performing in Chicago, IL at Schubas Lincoln Hall on August 17.
