As far as bands go, Ireland’s Girl Band seem to have all of the foresight to create the kind of post-punk that contains all of the vigor of punk with the melody of post-punk. The band easily transcends the genre on their new single “Going Norway” off of their upcoming full length The Talkies due in late September, while giving you a song that has plenty of teeth at the same time.
The song begins with these banging on trashcans kind of beats and dead pan vocals that ratchet up the energy of the track. When the leering guitar comes in with the murky bass, the song sounds like things may explode soon when the vocals begin screaming. There’s a lot here to unpack as the band changes direction multiple times within the track without ever really losing you. The mix of punk timing and post-punk structuring is purely masterful while the band gives us another peak into their upcoming album.
“Going Norway” is available for streaming on all platforms or the video can be seen above or on YouTube, while a limited edition 7″ single can be purchased here. The Talkies is available for pre-order directly from Rough Trade before its September 27 release. Girl Band will be on tour beginning October 02 at Beat Kitchen in Chicago, IL until November 23 at Vicar Street in Dublin, Ireland. The band’s complete tour itinerary can be found here.
