Now that Ex-Hex is officially a four piece in adding Michelle Mae formerly of The Make-Up, they’ve decided after the release of their latest full length and a round of touring, that it’s time to release new music. With that they’ve dropped a digital two song release with “It’s Real/What Kind of Monster Are You.” While the latter is a cover of a Slant 6 song, the band brings a revitalized rock song with the former that’s hard not to like.
“It’s Real,” the title track from their last full length album wasn’t on the record, but it certainly keeps those old rock fires burning. Mary Timony and company seem to really admire that Tom Petty meets early Pat Benatar sound, and it shows on this song. The way they mix dual vocals with the snarled guitar before this swooping riff comes in is just wondrous in its sound. On “What Kind of Monster Are You?” they give the song a more seasoned touch without altering it too much. The song has the same intensity as the original while expanding that rock sound in a track that was originally for the riott girrl crowd.
Both songs are available to purchase in all digital music stores via Merge Records or they can be streamed on all streaming sites. Ex-Hex is on tour September 13 in Pioneertown, CA at Pappy & Harriet’s until December 14 in Baltimore, MD at Ottobar. The band’s complete tour routing can be found here.
