New That Dog Album is the Band’s Best Release

Return albums once a band breaks up can be difficult and at many times, not worth the effort. For many bands, it’s impossible to rekindle those earlier emotions in where they are in present time. However difficult that can be for most artists, it seems that That Dog figured out a way to break past all the difficulties. Since reforming in 2011 the trio has spent two years of that time working on their latest release Old LP. What you’ll notice as a fan and even as a casual listener, is that it’s an album that could have come out twenty years ago or last week.

For starters, the instrumentation here is on a level the three piece never reached in their first stretch. The songwriting is ahead of that era of the band as well. Where they may have wanted to fit a certain mold twenty years ago, the band doesn’t hold back here and the results are fantastic. Lush strings, chunky riffs and perfect vocal harmonies find their way all over the album.

Stand out tracks include the harmonies and frenzied energy of “Just The Way.” Sounding fresher than bands a quarter of their age, the trio balances the multiple vocals with an ease you don’t get much anymore. The almost yacht rock tone of “Bird On A Wire” where the track is bookmarked between a stellar build at the opening and a symphonic closing at the end. “When We Were Young” gives way to vocals used in a manner that would make Brian Wilson proud. The weight between the airy voices and the easy going instruments gives way to a sound that is ahead of the curve.

It’s really all here. That Dog finds the space between the past and the future by cementing themselves as a positive force in the present. Even on our favorite track “Drip Drops” the band is sandwiched between stringed instruments and vocal clusters that hold your attention while bringing a smile to your face. If time was all that That Dog needed, then it definitely worked. Old LP is the new standard for what bands reuniting need to do when they release new material.

Old LP is ready to stream wherever you stream music and it can be purchased digitally in all online music stores. That Dog will appear at Regent Theater in Los Angeles, CA on November 16 and at Warsaw in Brooklyn, NY on November 23.
