Typically when we do concert reviews, we have a photographer on hand to snap shots of the artists. Of course while that’s typical it wasn’t in the cards for the night we caught Ra Ra Riot in person. Though while we wished we had a way to capture the band’s energy driven set, we’ll do our best to let you in on what you missed.
Supporting their new album Superbloom, is was obvious from the jump that the band came to get down. Donning matching white outfits, the group ran through a hefty mix of fan favorites and newer songs. That distinction of the band wearing all white was a far cry from what we saw from the band in their opening dates with Jimmy Eat World and Third Eye Blind. Gone were colorful outfits and the selective song choice to be memorable in favor of a more curated set with deep cuts and time to stretch out a bit.
The colors weren’t needed as the music itself is already dazzling. Ra Ra Riot has gotten more and more pop focused over the years, which translates to a more fun and energetic live set. The band’s use of audience interaction and steering closer towards a strong finish, a relaxed middle and a dizzying closure meant that the band’s live set when they headline is more must see than when they’re direct support.
Their support for the leg of the tour we caught was Texas’ Bayonne. Behind his new album Drastic Measures the producer and multi-instrumentalist brought passion and energy to his performance. Since we’d caught him early on, before he had a drummer on stage and before he inked with Mom+Pop Records, we weren’t shocked that he brought it all and left it on the stage. The packaging of the two bands together made for a memorable evening everyone should experience.
Superbloom can be streamed on all services or digitally purchased in all online music shops. The album is also available physically in multiple formats and bundles directly from the band. Ra Ra Riot is on tour tonight in Los Angeles, Ca at Teragram Ballroom until December 13 in London, UK at Oslo Hackney. The band’s complete tour schedule can be accessed here.
