We’re big fans of the music that Stef Chura makes. With her signature vocals and heartfelt emotions soaking up the spaces between her guitar tone, she’s always impressed us with how she approaches music. Now with her critically acclaimed new album Midnight out into the world, she’s shared a new cover of the Silver Jews song “How To Rent a Room,” and she makes it her own in the process.
Opening with Chura’s vocals and a guitar, the drums come quickly as David Berman penned lyrics sound as poignant as they did when he sang them. Coming after Berman’s passing earlier this year, it’s still the same track, yet Chura molds it to work within her own terms. Slowed down a half-step, the song resonates with heft as Chura places her own personal spin on the track.
The song can be purchased digitally directly from Saddle Creek or in all digital outlets, where a portion of the sales will go to MusiCares. It’s also available to stream on all platforms. Midnight is also available to purchase from Saddle Creek on multiple formats. Stef Chura is on tour tomorrow in Paris, France at Supersonic until November 15 in Detroit, MI at Magic Stick. Her complete tour routing can be accessed here.
