New Album From Psychic Lemon is Psych Defined

We think there’s a good chance that you’ve never heard the insanely diverse sounds of the band Psychic Lemon. In fact, we wouldn’t be shocked if you’d actually never heard the band before now. However, the London based band has been around a good while now and they make some of the best psych rock we’ve ever heard. Mixing in kraut touches and psychedelic structures, their new album Freak Mammal is the perfect blend to create some of the best psych music you’ll ever hear.

The whole release is only five tracks, but what a five tracks it is. Elements of progressive rock, psych rock and kraut rock touch the songs throughout, taking you down a twisted rabbit hole of the band’s creation. The opener “Dark Matter” is the best way to begin what’s in store. The dark synths that open the song sound like they’re coming from a vacuum in space. The drums have an air to them that are spacious and enlightened. And the guitar sounds like the feedback coming off of Oliver Ackermann’s custom made amplifiers. The music is so twisted in psych rock components that it makes you think that maybe you’ve never heard psych rock before.

The band continues this enigmatic journey throughout the album. “Seeds of Tranquility” is like a good trip into a place that you forgot existed while “Free Election Collective” is spacious and elemental. The way the band approaches songs is like no one else. There’s a reckless abandonment to it all, steering towards the freedom that music can bring rather than trying to tamp it all down. Of the five tracks, “White Light” is the biggest standout. Graces in how it gets structured has the fevered intensity of heavier music, yet it’s too cavernous and extensive to fall into hard rock. Instead, the band keeps taking things up a notch, pushing the boundaries of the genre while seemingly attempting to force the speakers out of the amplifiers. Freak Mammal is like nothing else in psych, which is what makes it so memorable.

The album is available to purchase physically directly from Drone Rock Records on multiple vinyl variants. It can also be streamed on all platforms or purchased digitally wherever you download music. Psychic Lemon will perform in Cambridge, UK at The Portland Arms on November 27.
