Jeff Rosenstock, you know the guy who has raucous live sets that feel like a giant party? Well it appears that he can’t slow down. Rosenstock has had a pretty strong run of releases in a couple of years including his wonderful album Post, his live album Thanks, Sorry that we haven’t even had time to review and now a new one featuring Laura Stevenson. However, those ready for another collection of indie pop bangers might not be ready for what Still Young is. The four song EP has Rosenstock and Stevenson trading vocal duties on four Neil Young covers, and the end result is a magical side of both artists.

The opening version of “Harvest Moon” takes the song to a sonic space where it’s still very recognizable yet still different. Stevenson opens on the mic and she swoons as she pulls you in. When Rosenstock sings, he offers up another side and it’s really wondrous in how he pulls it all together. While “After The Gold Rush” is completely redone and reimagined from the original, it works in a way that you’d expect from both artists. And with the closer “Through My Sails” the du crafts a magically soft demeanor that places them both on another plane, it’s their cover of “Ambulance Blues” that we were most intrigued by. With that immediate hook on the guitar, the twang and the grind mixes perfectly with their two voices. Rosenstock sounds tender while Stevenson gives a vocal presence that’s hard not to be moved by. As far as cover releases go Still Young wins. As far as a duo, Rosenstock and Stevenson should look at making something with a longer run time together. They work well together, making you want more even if they’re playing originals.
