Staying dormant doesn’t seem to be in the DNA of Kevin Devine. After multiple solo tours this year and a run of singles, he’s back with The Goddamn Band. Together they’re releasing a cover album of Nevermind by Nirvana out this Friday. The immediate take away you get with their cover of “In Bloom” is that they’re acutely aware of how important nailing the album truly is.
While the track stays in line with the original, Devine’s vocals aren’t as harsh as those originally sang by Kurt Cobain. With that said, there’s no shocking elements here, though softer and more tender vocals give the song a new light to shine in. Devine isn’t stretching or attempting to emulate Cobain’s style in how he sang the song originally, which makes for a nice version of the track.
The band’s cover of “In Bloom” is available to stream on all sites. Nevermind is available to preorder directly from Bad Timing Records on a limited edition vinyl on November 22. Kevin Devine will be on tour both solo and with The Goddamn Band beginning tonight at The Echoplex in Los Angeles, CA until February 11 at La Botanique in Bruxelles, Belgium. His complete tour schedule can be accessed here.
