Going from a D.I.Y. band with a strong word of mouth following to being a signed band with new music in the works is a rarity. However when you hear the new single “Lilac” from UK four piece Porridge Radio, you should quickly realize why Secretly Canadian snatched them up. Full of post-punk structure and indie rock tones, the band has a sound that’s their own while still feeling familiar.
The song has a sonic landscape that travels between punk and post-punk to new wave and indie rock. With deadpan vocals that bring forward all of their British charm, there’s a lot of depth in the music and the band’s overall sound. Their use of strings and secondary vocals give the song more distance while helping them stand out in a more positive way. The use of searing guitar and and minimalist notes gives the band a sound that reminds you of no one modern and few from the past, yet it never sounds alienating either. The video taking place on a beach feels deeply personal and inward while matching the sounds the song brings forward.
The video can be streamed above or on YouTube. Lilac is available to purchase in all digital music stores or it can be streamed on all streaming sites. Porridge Radio is on tour from December 13 in London, UK at MOT Unit 18 until May 22 through 24 in Dartington, UK at Sea Change Festival. The band will also be at SXSW in Austin March 17 through 21. Their tour dates can be accessed here.
