As far as places go, Japan is the largest by any means. As anyone who’s been there will tell you, it’s not large by any stretch of the imagination. But in recent years, the country has given us more interesting music than a little, one of which is avant-rock group OOIOO. Lead by YoshimiO of The Boredoms, the band transcends what you think you may know of avant music and turns it on its head. With a new album nijimusi coming next week, the four piece has shared a new song “jibun” that you need to get into your head as soon as possible.
Th song is book marked with snappy drums and pedal soaked tones. Changing direction throughout, the track has a more free flow feel that lends itself closer to free jazz. The graces of tone that come and go, the way the band feels like they’re channeling tones; it all adds up to an intriguing sound like no one else.
The new song can be streamed above or on all streaming platforms. nijimusi is available for preorder directly from Thrill Jockey on multiple formats. OOIOO will be appearing at April 03 through April05 in The Hague, NL at Rewire Festival.
