If you’re looking to pop off, the best way is to be yourself and stay true to what you’re attempting to do. In many ways that’s what the music of King Krule feels like, an artist doing their own thing. The last time Krule toured North America, the shows sold out quickly and proved that his sound was something everyone was finding as a breath of fresh air. Now with a new album Man Alive! announced for release in February, his new single “(Don’t Let The Dragon) Draag On” and its video have a cinematic feel.
The song has plenty of layers sandwiched between lo-fi blues and hip hop structure. Krule comes in vocally with a slow and almost screwed sounding rhyme while the slow trap beat plays underneath. The song is intriguing in that it also incorporates hints of chillwave in how it rolls out. The video is black and white and feels like somethig from the early days of cinema. Tied to a stake as the flames rise at his feet, Krule rhymes like he knows the end is near as the flames get hotter.
The video can be seen above or on YouTube. Man Alive! is ready for preorder in multiple formats directly from Matador Records before its February 21 release. King Krule is on tour starting March 04 in Paris, France at L’Olympia until April 25 in New York, NY at Webster Hall. His complete tour schedule can be accessed here.
