New Jersey’s Pinegrove make a brand of indie rock that’s hard to get your hands on today. Catchy but not pop, well produced but not overly so, they’ve made their name known since their debut in 2015. Now with a new album Marigold coming tomorrow, they’ve released the final pre-release single, and “The Alarmist” should really get you excited for what the new album will ultimately be.
The song has a very open beginning, lush with instruments and an easy going stride. The vocals come in like a breath of fresh air, sounding heartfelt and honest. Like a letter that didn’t get delivered, they help move the track along before the band goes into a slower and quieter space. Then out of nowhere a guitar fills the spaces with a squealing howl, pulling you back in to discover all that the song carries. The arrangements here show that Pinegrove has grown since their acclaimed 2018 album, while not changing in the process.
“The Alarmist” is available to stream on all streaming sites. Marigold is available to presave from all outlets or to preorder physically directly from Rough Trade on multiple formats. Pinegrove will be on tour starting tonight at The Sultan Room in Brooklyn, NY until August 19 at Praia do Taboao in Paredes De Coura, Portugal. Their complete tour schedule can be accessed here.
