In this life, you often come across bands that just spark something when you hear them. There’s something there, maybe it’s youthful energy or maybe it’s just their sound that you can’t help but like. Recently getting turned on to The Chats meant that I’d found a new band to set a focus on. The Australian trio has been around a bit of time, even releasing their debut album when they were still in high school. Now they’re ready to take the next step. The band just announced a new album High Risk Behavior set for release in late March, and their new single “The Clap” & its video should stay with you well after you check them out.
While the video has an animated side that’s quite comical in its youthful presentation, the magic here is the music. Three chord, no frills punk. In the guise of bands like The Kinks or Buzzcocks, their sound is up and catchy. The way the lyrics are almost shouted, the snap of the drums and the terse guitars are blend to create an infectious song you can’t help but place on repeat.
The video can be viewed above or on YouTube, the song can be streamed on all platforms. High Risk Behavior is available for preorder directly from Bargain Bin Records before its March 27 release. The Chats are on tour starting April 10 in Indio, CA at Coachella until October 29 in London, UK at Electric Brixton. Their complete tour schedule can be located here.
