At this point, the amount of music that Guided By Voices is releasing is almost comical. With three new albums last year alone, the long running Robert Pollard project has a new record Surrender Your Poppy Field ready for delivery in February. While the output amount is astounding from a band that’s always had a large output, their new single “Man Called Blunder” shows promise for what the full length could sound like.
There’s not a lot of new here, as it’s still a GBV track. The driving rock tones and distanced vocals are all here, though the track does have that sparkle that Pollard has placed his stamp on for years. The verse has an up stride while the chorus has more of a finished feel than some of the songs the band released last year. The biggest difference there is in how much craft seems to be at hand here, and not just another track that was written and recorded. It’s pure indie rock, just the way fans of the band seem to like it.
“Man Called Blunder” can be streamed above or on all streaming sites. Surrender Your Poppy Field is ready for physical preorder directly from Rockathon Records ahead of its February 20 release. Guided By Voices are on tour starting April 03 in Baltimore, MD at Ottobar until July 10 in Minneapolis, MN at Fine Line Music Cafe. The band’s complete schedule is located here.
