Sharon Van Etten Releases Stunning New Single “Beaten Down”

Last year Sharon Van Etten captured all of our hearts with her emotionally charged album Remind Me Tomorrow. After a heavy run of tour dates, it felt like that may be all we’d hear from the artist before she had a new album. However Van Etten is back with a new single and video that both offer her music in a whole new light. With “Beaten Down,” we hear Van Etten in a new way while the John Congleton produced track sticks with you well after you first hear it.

The song is a new direction, opening with minimal orchestral tones. The use of synths here creates a depth that Van Etten achieves throughout her music, yet on this track it hits a bit harder. Her vocals work in a perfect balance between the electronic notes and the carefully arranged instrumentation. The stark stabs of piano add to the refreshed sound, lending your ears to hear her like you’ve never heard her before. The video by Giraffe Studios is just as stark. With two dancers and the black and white film, there’s a new sheen in which to imagine how you hear and see the music of Sharon Van Etten.

The video is available to view above or on YouTube. “Beaten Down” can be downloaded from all digital music stores or streamed on all streaming sites via Jagjaguwar. Sharon Van Etten is on tour April 17 at Rams Head Live! in Baltimore, MD until July 29 at Summerstage in Central Park in New York, NY. Her complete tour dates can be accessed here.
