Fall For the Intimate Notes of Canada’s Laura Gray

In the search for new music, at times that leads us to new artists and new artistry. For a while now we’ve been stating that there’s something in the air up in Canada. A slew of multi-talented acts like Homeshake, Daniel Romano and Andy Shauf call the area home-as does Laura Gray. The Montreal artist has one of the more unique sounds we’ve heard in a good while, melding together orchestral pop with gloomy folk. With a debut EP called Better Lighting coming in May, Gray has released the video for her new single “Break, Drift,” and we think you’ll be enraptured as much as we are with her sound.

The song opens with notes that touch on the darker side of post punk, yet the music is nothing like post punk. Closer to new wave mixed with early nineties alternative, the notes dance beneath the vocals in a way that holds your attention. Gray’s vocals are the catalyst here, drawing you closer as the song plays it’s pop stride. The video is a cluster of images with the singer songwriter as the lead character. With the dance of imagery mixing together, there’s a visual component that works perfectly with the balanced nuance of the song.

The video can be viewed above or on YouTube. The song should be available to stream on all platforms and to purchase in all digital outlets. Laura Gray will appear at The Diving Bell Social Club in Montreal on March 14 and on March 31, the second show is for the EP release.
