For Luba Dvorak, Honky Tonk Country is Who He Is

For anyone who’s a fan of traditional country music, there’s still a lively amount of artists who steer from the glitzy side of country music. While it would be a much better place if country steered closer to Hank Williams and less towards pop music, the tales of how artists came to be as well as why they choose a route far less glamorous is definitely news worthy to us. If you dig deep outside the albums that have ten producers and another twenty songwriters, there’s acts that are closer to country’s early beginnings than you may know. That’s how we learned about the music of Luba Dvorak. Aside from two of the better country albums we heard in 2019, Dvorak has a backstory pulled straight from the earlier trappings of what made country music so appealing in the first place. No Nashville shine here, just pure honky tonk which he describes as Brooklyn Twang meant that he was the perfect subject for our podcast, Self-Released Songs.

Born in Czechoslovakia and raised in Canada, Dvorak is the definition of what country music originally was. Tales sung by those who lived a life somewhere else before immigrating to America. The harrowing tale of how he escaped a communist regime with his family is one thing, growing up with a folk protest singer father is another. It’s part of the fabric that makes this country so appealing, and a portion of why his music is the same. While Dvorak would soon live in New York and cut his teeth more than most, it’s his move to Texas that really seems to help him cultivate a mixture of a life well lived. His story and how he creates music is his alone to tell, and we find it all engaging as well as appealing.

You can purchased American Whino, Vol 1 and American Sin directly from the Luba Dvorak web store. You can stream his entire catalog on all streaming sites or purchase it in all digital outlets. You can catch Luba Dvorak in person Wednesdays at the Big Top Lounge in Houston, TX starting February 26. He’s also set to appear at The Cutting Room in New York, NY on May 21 and at Torne Valley Vineyard in Hillbrun, NV on May 23. His complete live schedule is available here. The Self-Released Songs podcast can be heard at Anchor or on this website.
