For a good while, Real Estate has made multi-layered pop music that was worth digging into. The New Jersey band came into prominence about a decade ago, and to date they haven’t disappointed with their catchy and relaxed vibes. On their new album The Main Thing, they take chill to a new head space while still delivering plenty of pop tunes.
The opener “Friday” is a great way to get things started. With a relaxed tone, the heavily instrumented song delivers plenty of chill pop without putting the listener to sleep. While this tone of chill pop remains on tracks like “Gone” and “Falling Down,” it’s also not the only pace the band operates at here. Tracks like “November” and “The Main Thing” are more upbeat and snappy. The way the songs mix between slower jams creates a tone of loose and unwound tones. With the two sides of the album intertwined, our favorite of the 13 came on “Paper Cup(feat. Sylvan Esso).” The song was littered with multiple instruments and a happy-go-lucky sound that’s as infectious as the pop hooks baked in.
The Main Thing can be purchased physically from Domino Recording Co. It can also get streamed or purchased digitally wherever you prefer online. Real Estate is on tour starting April 09 in Detroit, MI at El Club. Their tour ends on July 29 in New York, NY at Summer Stage in Central Park. The band’s complete tour routing can be accessed here.
