A couple of days ago, Bright Eyes ended their nine year absence of new music with a new single, “Persona Non Grata.” While we already had plans for what we ran that day and the subsequent days that have followed, we also were curious to dig in on the track. When the band announced they were back after a nine year hiatus, it wasn’t shocking as that seems like how music is nowadays. However what we find with the song is that in many ways it’s typical Bright Eyes, and that should be enough for fans of the band.
Depending how you look at it, there’s no shockers here. The song sounds like a Bright Eyes song. However with Oberst at the helm, everything he’s done in the past nine years as had that tone. Not knocking it in any way, as we love when landmark bands return from the shadows. The track opens with Oberst’s voice and lead by a piano. The drums are light and the vocals are at the top of the mix, keeping the words in your head. Though with all of that, the magic comes in the chorus where the extra instrumentation makes the song lift off and take on a new personality.
The song can be streamed on all streaming sites. It can also be purchased in all digital outlets via Dead Oceans. News of an upcoming full length and a possible tour supporting it should be coming sooner than later.
