Steve Gunn is such a prolific artist, that it’s always amazing that he’s not dropping songs on the daily. In an unprecedented time as now, it’s odd to not see visuals of him touring nonstop as well. As we wait for those days to return, Gunn has released a new 3 song E.P. Livin’ In Between. Featuring songs from an Amazon Original and Aquarium Lagniappe Drunkard Session from last year, the songs that make up this cover release are the type you wished other acts had the guts to take on.
Opening with a cover of the Neil Young classic “Motion Pictures (For Carrie),” Gunn feels right at home. Adding his own twist to the song, it feels like a song that works within his own catalog of songs. There’s a wondrous tone here, offering up Gunn as he should be heard in an intimate way. On the Misfits cover “Astro Zombies,” there’s more weight due to the way the original was performed. Here, the folk twang works perfectly as it makes the song more Gunn’s that Glenn Danzig’s. Even those “woah’s” and “oohs” have more heft than the way they sounded on the original crackled vinyls. Closing out with Michael Chapman’s “Among The Trees,”Gunn gets the closest to what he’s known for in terms of sound. A long time collaborator to Gunn, Chapman’s words and guitar licks sound extraordinary here, while Gunn makes another song his own without any heavy lifting.
The E.P. is available to purchase digitally via Matador Records or to stream on all streaming sites. A lot of the Steve Gunn tour dates have been rescheduled. He is still set to perform August 02 at Newport Folk Festival in Newport, RI and at Empty Bottle in Chicago,IL on October 02. His complete run of shows can be accessed here. Due to COVID-19, these dates are subject to change.
