For a while now, we’ve been fans of the improvisational and in the moment sounds of Self Defense Family. Between a revolving door member base and their on the spot writing process, they’ve given us a mix of beautiful and intriguing sounds over the past decade. Now as part of their Island Single Series, the band has unearthed two epic tracks they’re releasing as a seven inch single. With both songs “Make Me A Pallet Fire On Your Floor” and “Local Clerics,” the band’s sound will have you reeling from these two tracks alone.
With “Make Me A Pallet Fire On Your Floor,” the more punk or hardcore edges of the band’s sound become more clear. The clashing tones and intense vocals are up against a swaying stream of textures that give way to a sounds that’s grand and almost orchestral. However for “Local Clerics” the band takes their sound to a mix of droning and experimental notations, offering up their more eclectic side. There’s a lot here that’s more melodic than some of their previously released efforts, by it’s also just as beautifully diverse as anything they’ve released so far. Self Defense Family has always defied genres, and here it’s as evident as ever that great music can’t be defined.
Both songs are available to stream on Bandcamp. The seven inch vinyl is limited to 1000 copies and available for preorder directly from Run For Cover Records ahead of its June 29 release date.
