Thirty seven years at any gig feels like a long time. However for a band like The Flaming Lips, it’s just what they do. Never ones to sit and stay dormant, the group has just announced their new album American Head set for release in September. To mark the occasion the band has released a new video and a new song “My Religion Is You.”
Opening with piano, the song feels more like a ballad. With Wayne Coyne’s vocals calling out, there’s a real vibe that’s like The Beatles here in many ways. When the drums and the brass synths come in though, the song takes a different form. The dual vocals ring out and show the depths that the band can take their music. The video features Coyne in front of a blazing fire as a cloaked man takes a cross back and forth. While it may have religious themes, it’s definitely not a religious song.
You can watch the video above or stream the new single on all digital platforms. American Head is available for preorder directly from Warner Records on various formats and bundles before its September 11 release. The Flaming Lips are scheduled to perform at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, CA on January 25, 2021 until February 02, 2021 in Denver, CO at Mission Ballroom. Their complete tour schedule is available here.
