For many people, Jon Benjamin isn’t a musician, but rather the voice of Bob Belcher on ‘Bob’s Burgers,’ Archer on ‘Archer’ or even Coach McGuirk from ‘Home Movies.’ Five years ago the comic turned voice actor also proved he could play music with his album Well I Should Have…Learned to Play Piano. Now Benjamin is back billed as Jon Benjamin-Jazz Daredevil. On his latest offering The Soundtrack Collection, Benjamin takes some of your favorite themes and reworks them with a Moog in the best way possible.
Benjamin really expands here with the Moog. The nine track release covers plenty of theme songs and music from film with ease. Opening with the Kenny Loggins song “Danger Zone (Theme from Top Gun)” he takes the song from the start and turns it into a comical prose between himself and Kenny Loggins. He follows this up with an intriguing tone on “Chariots of Fire (Theme from Chariots of Fire)” where the piano and the electronic haze of the Moog intermingle.
But the comedy doesn’t end as Benjamin plays the wrong notes on “Axel F (Theme from Beverly Hills Cop),” as he also seems to do on “Theme from Halloween.” While it’s difficult to say if these are done this way intentionally, it is safe to say that the best song comes on “Dueling Moogs.” Much like “Dueling Banjos,” the song being done with Moog synthesizers is funny yet also entertaining in that it’s being done at all. It’s actually done quite well.
The Soundtrack Collection is available for purchase directly from Sub Pop Records. It can also be streamed on all streaming platforms or purchased in all digital outlets.
