As far as singer songwriters go, Bill Callahan is a name you can bank on. Since his years in Smog and now as a solo act, his tunes come forward as honest and without fluff while offering plenty of weight in their wake. With a new album Gold Record coming in September, his latest single is a reworked version of a Smog song with “Let’s Move To The Country.”
With that talk sing flavor that serves him well, this version of the song feels more heartfelt and more tender. With just the acoustic and his voice, Callahan delivers a sound that’s honest and direct here as he gives way to a new interpretation that feels more modern. Even though it’s in a different direction, it might feel more emphatic because it could be a personal letter to embark on his current situation. The guitar work here is also masterfully done and feels very in the moment.
The song can be streamed above or on Bandcamp. Gold Record is available to preorder directly from Drag City Records on various formats ahead of its September 04 release date.
