Yo La Tengo is that band that seems to keep going and never relenting. With a string of releases that cover a vast expanse of time and indie rock, the trio just released an instrumental album that shows how they’re always ready to mix things up. Of course, it seems that’s not enough for the band as they’re announcing a new EP today titled Sleepless Night. Coming in October the release is made up of covers and a new song selectively chosen by the band and artist Yoshitomo Nara for his retrospective exhibit at LACMA. The lead single is a cover of The Byrds’ classic “Wasn’t Born To Follow.”
The upbeat track delivers a new sound for the band. Happy go lucky and full of Americana tones, the dual vocals offer a softer and more upbeat tone. The unplugged and plugged in mixture in sound works amid the vocals to create tones that stick with you. The song works so well that you forget that it’s a cover song. This is the sound that the icons don’t head towards often, yet when they do it’s truly insightful.
The EP can be preordered directly from Matador Records before its October 09 release. The song can be heard above or on all streaming platforms.
