The Flaming Lips are definitely in a full court press right now surrounding their upcoming album American Head. The band’s 21st album coming in a few weeks, the release of songs surrounding it has shown the varied juxtapositions of the group’s sound. On their new single “Mother Please Don’t Be Sad” they take their sound further while the words recall a time when singer Wayne Coyne was held up at gunpoint.
Opening with piano and Wayne Coyne playing the trumpet, the song is already well versed in its tones. Backed by strings, Coyne sounds very personalized here. Touches of guitar and choral vocals roll in and offer more depth in an already deep track. The mix of brass and extra vocals just builds on the hefty notes while the band adds their own twist with thunderous drums and heady sounds.
You can watch the video above or on YouTube. The song is ready to stream on all platforms. American Head can be preordered directly from Warner Records in various bundles and formats before its September 11 release. The Flaming Lips are set to return to touring beginning January 25 in Los Angeles, CA at The Wiltern until February 02 in Denver, CO at The Mission Ballroom. Their complete tour schedule is accessible here. Due to COVID-19, these dates could be subject to change.
