Spoon Shares New Version of “Rainy Day Taxi”

In the couple of months, Spoon has been dropping relics and classics from the past as part of their Slay On Cue reissue series. Now the band has shared a new song of sorts. Recorded remotely between Austin and Los Angeles during the pandemic in May, the band has released a new version of their song “Rainy Day Taxi (Big Beat).” Taken from their 2014 album They Want My Soul, this version definitely sounds different without altering the sound too much.

With louder claps and a bigger beat, the song is amplified against the piano. While it would seem this would drown out the vocals, here it almost amplifies them. The strum of the acoustic against the keys works in ways that stick with you, while the bridge adds an organic feel to the track that’s better than how it originally sounded.

The song can be heard on Bandcamp as well as purchased from there as well. The Spoon catalog of reissues are available for purchase directly from Matador Records.
