Since this magazine began almost two years ago, we championed the music of Houston’s Astragal. Watching the trio go from dream pop band to post punk band was not only fascinating but exhilarating to witness. While the band as been on hold through the current pandemic, they’ve returned with a cover of the least likely band possible, Maroon 5. While we contend that Maroon 5 makes atrocious music, the guys in Astragal have offered up a pretty damn great cover of their hit song “She Will Be Loved.” The best part is that when you buy the song, all of the proceeds go to Black Lives Matter.
By stripping away the heavy production and pop touches of the original, the band immediately places your ears into a different head space. The drone of the guitars mixed with the unaffected vocals still carries the shimmer of the original while not being flanked in sugary notes. The build here is key while there’s no mistaking the post punk and shoegaze structuring. While there’s keys that add to the melody, this is not only an enjoyable cover but almost a reinvention as well.
You can hear the song above or on Bandcamp. You can also purchase it digitally directly from the No Bad Apples Bandcamp page.
