In recent years it’s become more and more obvious that The Mountain Goats are more diverse than many people believed. With a new album Getting Into Knives set for release in October, the band has revealed a new song that shows how they can really mix things up. With a throwback tone and a sound that’s large, “Get Famous” is like a new track from a completely different group.
With a nice seventies organ as the opening tone, singer John Darnielle comes in at the top of the mix as the band comes in. Additional horn adds to his voice with an almost Levon Helm sound. The way it’s tongue in cheek shouldn’t deter the sound that the band is creating here. Big and bombastic, it steers from their folky usual without seeming out of place. Even with a Wesley Willis name check, the song has the band sounding fresh and inventive this far into their career.
The single can be heard above or on all streaming sites. Getting Into Knives is ready to preorder on various formats from Merge Records ahead of its release on October 23. The Mountain Goats will be on the road beginning October 11 in Woodstock, NY at Levon Helm Studios until May 19 at Royal Oak Theatre in Royal Oak, MI. Their complete tour schedule is accessible here. Due to COVID-19, some of these dates could be subject to change.
