Tim Heidecker is going for broke. With his new album Fear Of Death out this Friday, Heidecker teamed up with The Lemon Twigs and Natalie Mering of Weyes Blood to craft his vision for the album. What transpired was a magical moment in time where Heidecker’s unabashed songwriting with its tongue in cheek lyrics combined with Mering’s angelic vocals to create a sound that’s hard to beat. On their new single “Oh How We Drift Away,” Weyes Blood and Heidecker reach a space that’s filled with supernatural tones and delicate notes.
Opening with Mering’s vocals and a piano, the drums softly roll in before she harmonizes with Heidecker in a way that feels natural. Her voice lifting the song to new heights, the balance between the two is extraordinary as brass and orchestral sounds make their way for a continual sound from someplace else. Mering sounds at home whether it be with Heidecker’s accompaniment or on her own. The sway of the bowed strings culminating with the pace of the song makes for a song that’s as engaging as it is beautiful.
“Oh How We Drift Away” is available to hear above or wherever you stream music.
