Cass McCombs isn’t really an artist who sits still. After releasing his latest album Tip Of the Sphere last year, McCombs has released plenty of songs and singles. However as wondrous as those songs were, his new single “Don’t (Just) Vote” is the first with a real message. Featuring Angel Olsen, Bob Weir and Noam Chomsky, the song’s message rings true from the jump.
Opening with a beat and a gentle guitar, the pace of the song is upbeat. While the words resonate from McCombs here, there’s lots to unpack from what he sings. The same can be said from what Olsen sings in the second verse. Olsen doesn’t hold back or mince words on the importance of getting involved. Even Noam Chomsky gets in some choice words about “excise a malignant cancer from the body politic.” It all works and the message is clearly made apparent in the lyric video.
The song can be heard above or wherever you stream music. It can also be purchased in all digital outlets via Anti Records. All proceeds after costs will go to Elevate Oakland to help fund music programs.
